Prevent deactivation of Find My iPhone

By (author unknown), MacOSXHints.comDecember 28, 2010 at 10:30AM

Currently if you do not have a password on your device a thief (or child) could deactivate Find My iPhone. However most people don’t know that you can prevent this by using a passcode. (This might require iOS 4.2 or later; I didn’t have an earlier version to test it.)

To prevent anyone from turning it off you can do the following steps:

  • Open Settings and go to ‘General.’
  • Scroll down and tap on ‘Restrictions.’
  • Turn on restrictions and enter a four digit passcode and repeat to turn on.
  • Under ‘Allow Changes:’ turn both of the switches Location and Accounts to Off.

Now you cannot disable find my iPhone without the passcode. This also prevents changes to anything related to location services and changes made to your email accounts.

[crarko adds: I tested this, and it works as described. Since it’s only a four digit passcode this isn’t super secure, but it may give you time to locate and/or …

“Disneyland Dream”

By Sheila Ryan, clusterflockDecember 27, 2010 at 01:03PM

In the summer of 1956, an amateur filmmaker named Robbins Barstow made a record of his family’s trip to the Magic Kingdom, “Disneyland Dream,” that was recently admitted to the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress.

Robbins Barstow died in November at the age of 91. You can view “Disneyland Dream” either on YouTube or the Internet Archive.

Watching “Disneyland Dream” reminded me of a friend’s discovery of a Flickr stream that included photos of the library in the town where he lived until he was four. He said looking at those photos was “like looking into a dream.” “Disneyland Dream” feels a bit like that for me, too, but not because I ever visited Disneyland. The Barstow family lived in Wethersfield, Connecticut, my parents’ hometown and the site of our annual summer pilgrimage. I returned to Wethersfield a couple of times as an adult, but in my mind it remains as it was in the 1950s and 1960s, when I was a child.

Got a net neutrality complaint? Here’s what to do

By matthew.lasar@arstechnica.com (Matthew Lasar), Ars TechnicaDecember 27, 2010 at 11:56AM

The Federal Communications Commission’s new net neutrality rules are now almost a week old, and the fighting over them has just begun. Republicans vow they’ll kill the FCC’s
move in Congress, calling it a blow to personal liberty and small government.

Meanwhile the reform outfit Free Press has dubbed the Commission’s Order “Not Neutrality” and a “textbook example of industry capture of a federal agency.” The group is particularly disappointed that the rules exempt wireless broadband from its unreasonable discrimination ban and is lining up supporters for a new battle to get stronger regulations.

AT&T releases dramatic anti-texting while driving documentary

By Joshua Topolsky, Engadget RSS FeedDecember 27, 2010 at 11:33AM

We’re not sure how many more times it must be said, but seriously people — stop texting on your cellphone while operating a gigantic vehicle at high speeds. If you’re not already convinced that driving a car and trying to tap out a message on a tiny keyboard (or heaven forbid, no keyboard at all) is a poor match, perhaps the short documentary AT&T has just released will convince you otherwise. The carrier is launching a campaign geared towards teens over the holidays leading up to New Year’s Eve in the hopes that the youth of the world will be slightly less sure of their invincibility — at least where car driving and text messaging is concerned. Sure, the video (located after the break) borders on sentimentality at times, but we’ll take a little heavy-handedness over the injury or death of human beings simply because someone couldn’t wait to tell someone else that they’d be there soon. Trust us, your friends aren’t that worried about punctuality.
